    • ArcIMS Setting Up A Metadata Service is a complete guideline on how to setup a metadata service and users should also have it located at ArcIMS_install_location\ArcIMS\Manager\Help\metadata\start_metadata_service.htm.

    • Use the ArcIMS Creating A Metadata Service for SQLServer or Oracle.

    • To migrate the content of the current Isite to ArcIMS metadata server users have two options.

      1. Prepare all of the metadata in XML files and then put them in a Web accessible folder, WAF, (an HTTP where a browser can see its directory). Then let the support staff, geodata@usgs.gov, know the URL of the WAF and the ArcIMS metadata service that was just setup for publishing and they can move the content of the ArcIMS service.

      2. If they are running Isite, make sure it's the latest version (version 2) of Isite, and then let the support staff, geodata@usgs.gov, know the host, port, and database name. The support email will be redirected to the appropriate member who can move the content of the Isite to the ArcIMS metadata service.

    • Although the use of ISO Theme Keywords is not absolutely required to participate in geodata.gov, they do allow your metadata to be found more quickly. There are two ways to associate the ISO Theme Keywords:

      1. Add a Theme Keyword Thesaurus and Theme Keyword from the ISO list to all your metadata records, or
      2. Load a lookup table that associates the ISO term with your existing Theme Keywords. The following discussion will greatly assist in building a theme keyword lookup.

Download perl program Metapro (zipped or executable - this should be saved on your computer as a .pl file) that can be run under windows or UNIX to display the frequency of theme keywords you use in FGDC XML files in a selected directory. This can be a helpful resource to populate the lookup table in the harvest registration form. If you do not have Perl installed on your computer, you can download it from http://www.perl.org/.

The usage at the Windows or UNIX command line is:

        metapro.pl metadir

where 'metadir' is the full pathname to the directory containing FGDC metadata files in XML format. If you have multiple metadata directories you will need to run this several times. The results will be displayed to the screen unless you redirect it to a file:

        Example: metapro.pl c:\metadata\xfiles\ > myfrequency.txt
